About

I am a translational systems medicine researcher. My group combines computational methods with clinical questions: we build digital models of human cells and tissues, and use them to understand complex diseases and to find new treatments.

Our tools are systems biology methods, including genome-scale metabolic models, integrated multi-omics and single-cell networks, and deep learning. We apply them to liver disease, kidney fibrosis and cancer, with a focus on drug target discovery, drug repositioning and personalised treatment.

I lead the Digital Liver Group at King's College London and a research group at SciLifeLab in Sweden. I also teach bioinformatics and systems biology, and I make open tutorials for students.

Research

Digital cell and tissue models

Genome-scale metabolic models and integrated biological networks that simulate how human cells and tissues work, in health and disease.

Single-cell and multi-omics integration

Combining single-cell and bulk transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics to map gene expression across human tissues and cell types, and to find the hub genes and pathways behind disease.

Drug discovery and repositioning

Systems-biology-based drug repositioning and target discovery, for example for fatty liver disease, kidney fibrosis and clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

Liver disease and digital immunology

The Digital Liver Group studies liver diseases and the immune system with digital models, towards personalised treatment strategies.

Tutorials

Bioinformatics, step by step

Short videos (2.5–4 minutes) that explain the ideas and the maths behind bioinformatics analyses, one small step at a time, with a hands-on workshop that reproduces every calculation in R. Everything uses one real data set: mouse hearts after myocardial infarction (MI) or sham surgery, at day 1 and day 3 (ENA project PRJNA412001).
